Reciprocal Linking: Is It Still Worth The Effort?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
Donald Nelson

When the Internet was young, ten years ago, one of my most pleasurable online activities was to go to a site’s link page and follow the links to some cool sites. Equally fascinating was the prospect of having my site listed on some of those links pages, which prompted me to get into the activity now known as reciprocal linking, or trading links with other sites.

My, how times have changed! Now whenever a reciprocal link request lands in my “in box” I delete it immediately just like other pieces of obvious spam. How did this come to pass? As soon as it became known that Google’s PageRank system rewarded sites for incoming links, the trading of links, and even the buying and selling of links, heated up and most webmasters got into the act.

To make matters even worse the flood of reciprocal requests became a tidal wave in the past year as people sought to cash in on Adsense, Google’s contextual advertising system. Many sites have been constructed whose sole purpose is to get people to click on ads. The owners of these sites, in a concerted effort to get high rankings, have built complex link directories on their sites and are soliciting link exchanges.

The net result of these developments is that most requests that one receives these days are automated and will provide you with links on directory pages that have no PageRank and will hardly ever be seen by any human visitor. Another consequence is that when you, in good faith, send an email to someone requesting a legitimate exchange of links you may never get a reply because your email will be deleted by a webmaster, sick and tired of all the requests.

So is reciprocal linking a dead duck? The answer is a qualified “yes.” It takes a long time to conduct a link campaign these days, and it is harder to get links on sites with link pages that will generate traffic or help you with your search engine ranking.

So, don’t have big expectations from reciprocal linking. If you do want to build up your incoming links with this method you should do it in a highly targeted manner. Concentrate on trading links with sites that are closely related to yours. If you sell lawn mowers, then trade links with someone who is selling grass seed.

If you are not sure who might be a good link partner then visit the site of one of your competitors. If you have a Google tool bar installed do a “backward links” check which will produce a list of sites that link to your competitor. If you don’t have the toolbar installed just go to Google’s search page and make the following query:

link:http://www.yourcompetitor.com

Look at the sites that are linking to your competitor and see if you can find link pages that have a good PageRank (3 or more) and are situated so that they could send you traffic. These are the “plums” and you should try to pick them, by soliciting a link exchange with those sites.

Also, scrutinize the pages where your link might be placed. If it is buried deep in a directory or not within two clicks of the main part of the website then you can forget about exchanging links with that site. If the link pages have more than 50 links sloppily arranged, then you will also get little benefit from such an exchange.

This is a time consuming practice, and the results are diminishing. Along with reciprocal linking you should also try other ways of getting incoming links: distributing articles and press releases online with a link back to your site and buying or getting free placement in online directories.

In the cases of article distribution and also directory placement, the biggest results will come when your article or directory listing is highly targeted. If you can get an article placed in a high volume newsletter or an oft-visited blog then you have hit the jackpot.

Similarly if you find a directory that is important for your industry, a listing there may be well worth it even if you have to pay for it.

The reciprocal linking landscape has changed a lot in the past ten years, and even in the past one year. Reciprocal linking can be used judiciously but it is no longer the powerful traffic generating method that it once was.

Internet Marketing with Reciprocal Linking

Mention reciprocal linking on any internet marketing forum and you will be sure to get a barrage of heated replies. There is a continual debate about the advantages and disadvantages involved in reciprocal linking and both sides make convincing statements. So, should you or should you not get involved in reciprocal linking? Ultimately, the decision is yours but here are some guidelines:

1. The main goal of any linking strategy is to get more traffic to a website. Reciprocal linking can work for or against you in this matter depending on the site that you exchange links with. If you exchange links with sites that receive a lot of traffic, some of that traffic may be diverted to your site. On the other hand, if you exchange links with a low traffic site, you may divert some of your traffic to the other site without seeing a similar return. The solution is to exchange reciprocal links with a site with a page rank no lower than one level below yours and to try to exchange links with many sites with a higher page rank. Ideally, you would seek to exchange links with sites that have at least a PR 4.

2. Don’t exchange links with everybody that asks. What advantage is there in exchanging links with a site that sells wedding favors when your site is about dog training? Anyone that visits the wedding favor site will be looking for information concerning weddings, not dog training, and very few will click on your link regardless of how high the page rank is for the wedding site. The key here is to exchange links only with sites that are relevant to your site or to your keywords.

3. Avoid exchanging links with sites that have a huge link directory. If your site is listed on page 43 in your category of another site’s link directory, few people will ever see your link. Although a link will be generated to your site for the search engines, you will not receive much traffic from the link exchange. Try to exchange links with sites where your link will be displayed on the first, or at the most, the second page of another site’s link directory.

4. Build online relationships. Exchanging links with other relevant websites is a great way to start building partnerships with other website owners and may open the door for future joint venture requests.

5. Build your link popularity. Most search engines view sites that have many links to them as being important. So, the more sites that link to your site, the higher your site might rank. But again, make sure that all reciprocal links are relevant to your site or the search engines will penalize you.

If you do decide to get involved in reciprocal linking, join only well established link exchanges that allow you to approve or disapprove the link. Avoid link farms or link exchanges that will automatically exchange your link with their entire database regardless of the relevancy to your website.

The optimum way to set up a link page is to enter all links manually. Yes, it is time consuming but when you are starting out, this is the best way to do it.

You would first need to set up a page on your website just for your link categories. You can call this page anything you like such as Links, My Partners, Link Partners, My Link Partners, etc. Set up this page with the major categories and subcategories that are relevant to your site. Then, set up a page for each subcategory that will contain the actual links. Test to be sure that whenever anyone clicks on a subcategory that they are taken to the appropriate link page.

Prepare a short 3 - 5 line ad about your website or your product and include the URL to your website. This should be in HTML code for easy uploading. Each linking company has their own procedure, but generally, each time you ask to exchange links, you’ll need to copy and paste the other website’s HTML code onto your link page under the correct category and subcategory. You will then need to upload the updated page to your website.

Once this is done, let the other website know on which of your pages they can find their link. If the other website owner approves the link exchange, they should add your link to their link page and inform you on exactly what page you can find it.

Check to make sure that your link has been added to their site. If they have not added your link, you have the option of contacting the website owner as to why or of removing their link from your site.

3 Way Links an Emerging Trend or SEO Trap for the Unwitting Webmaster?

Monday, April 13th, 2009
Rosemary Donald

Traditionally reciprocal linking has been a tried and true method of raising the profile of a website on the internet. The major search engines still index sites based on the number of links from one site to another amongst many other factors. The more references and listings your website has on the internet the more exposure your site receives overall which impacts positively on your search engine rankings. The upside of reciprocal linking with a site whose content is similar or complimentary to yours is that traffic originating from their site to yours and vice versa is targeted content traffic who may be interested in purchasing the products and services you have on offer. You are also offering related content to your site visitors that they may find useful and interesting.

So where does ‘3 way linking’ fit into this picture?

3 Way Linking has been an emerging trend over the past 12 months where webmasters and website promotion companies who own or manage multiple sites initiate link exchange requests whereby you link to the site they are promoting however your link is placed on a third party site. Usually the site they are promoting has no visible link page set up on their site and no references to the link page/s where your reciprocal link is held. Typically the third party site where your link is listed has been built specifically for just this purpose and is usually a series of links with no site content. Alternatively your link may placed on a third party site that the webmaster owns but has no content relevance to your own site in an effort to hide the reciprocal nature of the link exchange from the search engines.

So what is the benefit of 3 way linking?

The only benefit is to the site who is proposing the 3 way link exchange in terms of quickly boosting their online presence on the internet and anonymously building links pages that have no direct link to them so that they can’t be penalized for deceptive SEO practices that blatantly attempt to manipulate the search engines. Be wary though, this doesn’t mean that your site can’t be caught out by being linked with a bad neighborhood site and consequently lead to having your search engine rankings drop!

Who else benefits, well clearly the website promotion/SEO company who are being paid a fee to dupe unwitting website owners to knowingly or unknowingly engage in these 3 way link practices. They may get away with it in the short term however practices that generally have little benefit to the wider internet community and are only being used to manipulate the search engines are typically weeded out by responses by the major search engines in redefining their ranking algorithms and dropping sites from search engine listings who behave inappropriately.

So how do you identify a 3 way link exchange invitation?

A simple word of advice, read your link exchange requests carefully as 3 way link exchanges can be hidden deceptively within the text offering you a link exchange with a site of similar content and value however if read carefully you will notice that the reciprocal URL site where your link exchange has been placed does not match. There is often no mention that the link exchange request is a 3 way link exchange. Alternatively the link exchange will not nominate a reciprocating URL where your link is to be placed however on completing the link exchange the location of your link is not placed on the direct URL of the site you agreed to exchange links with but on another third party site.

The last version of this type of link exchange invitation is the webmaster or website promotion company who is acting on behalf of a website will clearly state that the exchange is a 3 way link exchange or ‘triangular link exchange’ and will then espouse the benefits of such linking practices. For example here is one that I received recently for my Sabu Jewellery website, I have removed the site details of the initiating party for confidentiality purposes:-

“Dear Webmaster,

I found your website http://www.sabujewellery.com/ by google search engine and it has a good link popularity. Sir, I handle online marketing for my clients site. To increase the link popularity of my client’s site, I am now looking for triangular Link swapping with some good quality sites. You are already aware that Triangular Link swapping is much more popular and beneficial than Reciprocal Link exchange .This way both the sites gets the benefit of one way Linking. I would request you to place my client’s link at your site with the following details.

Our site details are…

(linking info of the site with similar content ie. the initiating site)

We have placed your link here…

(The URL location of the third party site which is in this case just a site for links, no actual content)

We would appreciate if you link back to our site.

Thanks & kind regards

Webmaster…”

A simple word of advice on 3 way link exchanges…

Whether you engage in 3 way link exchanges is entirely up to you, however I have few questions for you to consider before embarking on this type of SEO practice in an attempt to boost your search engine rankings:-

? How is anyone going to find the generic links page of the third party site on the Internet that lists your reciprocal link if it contains no useful content for website visitors?

? And why would you wish to exchange links with a site which has no real benefit to you or the wider internet community generally?

? What is the value of linking to a third party site that has no relevance to your own site content?

? Why are these sites relying on 3 way linking? Are they too lazy to build their own links pages and source quality link partners for their own site? Or is it just a ploy to manipulate the search engines?

? Can you afford to be associated with a third party site that may potentially be classed as a bad neighborhood site by the major search engines and result in your search engine rankings dropping by association?

The final word…

Don’t be fooled by the positive spin that website promoters are putting on 3 way links, do your homework and be one of the smart webmasters who looks to implement positive quality SEO practices on your site that not only benefit your own website, website visitors and your search engine rankings but add value to the wider internet community at large.
